He became Colour Sergeant 5952756 in the 5th Battalion Beds and Herts Regiment and was killed on 14th February 1942 during the invasion of Singapore by the Japanese. The country surrendered on the following day. He was 22 years old. He is commemorated on the war memorial at Kranji cemetery in Singapore.
