Title ERIC DOWNING'S STORY. A SHERMAN TANK EQUIPPED AS A FLAIL TANK
Description

This was the type of tank in which Eric Downing landed on Juno beach on D-day, June 6th 1944.

The tank was sometimes referred top as a mine-sweeper. It was fitted with a drum and heavy chains and balls. The rotating drum makes the balls flail the ground thus exploding mines. The tank cleared a route through minefields in front of advancing infantry.

As soon as the flail tank appeared on a battlefield it became the target for German anti-tank weapons.
